Combined Heat
and Power Generation (CHP) or Co-generation
CHP
or Co-generation is an energy conversion process, where electricity
and useful heat are produced simultaneously in one process. CHP heat
can be used either for district heating or for industrial processes.
The
CHP process may be based on the use of steam or gas turbines or
combustion engines (CHP techniques).
The primary energy source can be a wide range of fuels, including
biomass and fossil fuels, as well as geothermal or solar energy.
CHP for district heating
District heating means a system supplying heat produced centrally in one or
several locations to a non-restricted number of customers. It is
distributed on a commercial basis by means of a distribution network
using hot water or steam as a medium.
